We hear it all the time: “It was draining slowly for a few weeks, and then one day, it just stopped all together.” By then, the damage is already done. Grease has hardened in the pipe. Hair and soap scum have packed into a hard mass. Or someone flushed something they definitely shouldn’t have.

B&L Plumbing Services has responded to everything from minor kitchen clogs to full sewer line backups. Most of them were preventable. Here’s the advice our plumbers give every homeowner.

Why Drains Need Attention Before They Fail

Drain problems almost always develop slowly. You’ll hear a gurgling. You’ll notice a sluggish drain. Easy to ignore, but they get worse with time. Neglected drains can cause sewer backups, water damage, mold growth, persistent odors and costly emergency repairs. A few simple habits prevent all of that.

The Dos: Habits That Keep Drains Clear

1. Use Drain Screens in Every Shower, Tub and Sink

A mesh drain screen costs a few dollars and is the single most effective drain maintenance tool available. Hair binds with soap scum to form stubborn blockages. A screen stops it before it enters the pipe. Empty it weekly. Takes 10 seconds.

2. Flush Drains with Hot Water Weekly

Pour a full pot of very hot (not boiling) water down your kitchen drain once a week. It loosens grease and soap buildup before it accumulates. For bathroom drains, add a tablespoon of dish soap to help break down oily residue. (We recommend the blue one that cleans the oily ducks.

Pro Plumbing Tip: Know where your main shut-off valve is.

Know exactly where your main water shut-off valve is located before a drain issue becomes a flood. In most Kansas City-area homes, it’s near the water meter, often in the basement, utility room or on an exterior wall.

3. Do a Monthly Baking Soda and Vinegar Flush

Your mom was right. Half a cup of baking soda, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Let it fizz for 15 minutes, then flush with hot water. Safe for pipes, eco-friendly and effective for routine maintenance. Note: this won’t break through a real clog. That’s what our plumbers are here for.

4. Schedule a Professional Drain Cleaning Every 1–2 Years

Buildup happens regardless of good habits. Our team uses hydro-jetting technology that scours grease, scale and debris from inside your pipes, which is far more effective than store-bought drain cleaners or snakes. Think of it like a dental cleaning for your plumbing.

5. Act on Slow Drains Early

A slow drain is a warning. Something is already partially blocking the line, and waiting makes it worse and costlier. Multiple slow drains at the same time? That likely points to the main sewer line. Call us pronto.

The Don’ts: Mistakes That Lead to Big Repair Bills

1. Don’t Pour Grease or Cooking Oil Down the Drain

Grease is liquid when hot, solid when cool and it sticks to pipe walls. Layer by layer, it eventually blocks the pipe entirely. Let grease solidify in the pan and scrape it into the trash. For oils, seal them in a container and toss it.

2. Don’t Treat Your Toilet Like a Trash Can

Only human waste and toilet paper belong in a toilet. “Flushable” wipes ARE NOT flushable. They don’t break down and are among the leading causes of sewer backups we respond to in Kansas City. No cotton balls, dental floss, paper towels or medication either.

3. Don’t Overuse Chemical Drain Cleaners

Sulfuric acid and lye-based drain cleaners are caustic. Used regularly, they degrade your pipes from the inside, especially older metal pipes and PVC fittings. They’re also often ineffective on deep blockages, so the problem keeps returning. A professional drain cleaning solves it.

4. Don’t Put These Things Down Your Garbage Disposal

These items cause damage or clogs:

  • Fibrous vegetables, like celery, artichokes, corn husks (wrap around blades)
  • Starchy foods, like pasta, rice, potato peels (expand into paste)
  • Coffee grounds and tea leaves (settle and clump in the trap)
  • Eggshells (membrane coats blades; shells become abrasive grit)
  • Grease or oil of any kind
  • Bones or fruit pits

5. Don’t Ignore Gurgling Sounds or Sewage Smells

Gurgling usually means trapped air — a sign of partial blockage or a venting issue. Sewage odors can point to a dry p-trap, a cracked sewer line, or gases backing up into your home. Neither fixes itself, and sewer gas is a health hazard. Call us when you notice these signs.

6. Don’t DIY Your Way into a Bigger Problem

A two-hundred-dollar repair can easily become a two-thousand-dollar one if the wrong approach cracks a pipe or compacts a blockage further. If your first DIY attempt didn’t work, or if multiple drains are involved, stop and contact a licensed plumber.

Quick Room-by-Room Reference

Kitchen: Don’t pour grease or oils down the drain. Scrape plates before rinsing. Avoid stringy, starchy or hard foods in the disposal.

Bathroom Sink & Shower/Tub: Use a drain screen. Rinse with hot water after use. No nail polish remover or harsh chemicals.

Toilet: Waste and toilet paper only. Keep a wastebasket nearby for everything else.

Laundry Room: Clean the lint trap regularly. A lint catcher on the drain hose prevents buildup. Don’t ignore slow floor or laundry tub drainage.
