Kansas City Water Line Repair and Replacement
The water service line carries potable water from the utility connection toward a home or commercial building. A leak, restriction or failed line can reduce pressure, waste water, damage soil and paving, or interrupt service entirely.
B&L Plumbing Service diagnoses and repairs building water lines across the Kansas City metro. Our plumbing team is supported by an in-house excavation crew when the damaged line must be exposed or replaced.
Water Line Leak Repair
A localized defect may be repairable when the rest of the line remains serviceable and the damaged area can be accessed safely.
Full or Partial Water Line Replacement
Replacement may be appropriate for extensive corrosion, repeated leaks, widespread deterioration, an undersized line or damage across multiple sections.
New Water Service Installation
New construction, additions and property improvements may require a new or rerouted water service. Pipe sizing, route, depth, material and connection requirements depend on the building and local authority.
Signs of a Possible Water Line Leak
- An unexplained increase in water use or the water bill
- Wet, soft or unusually green ground along the service-line route
- Water surfacing near the foundation, meter, sidewalk or driveway
- A sudden or continuing drop in water pressure
- The meter moves while all known fixtures and water-using appliances are off
- Discolored water, sediment or recurring air in the line
- Sounds of running water when no fixture is operating
- Cracking, settling or damp areas near an underground leak
These symptoms do not always prove the private water service is leaking. Pressure and discoloration can also originate inside the building or on the utility side. Diagnosis helps locate the problem before repair work is planned.
What to Do if a Water Line Is Leaking
- Protect the property. Keep people away from washed-out soil, flooded electrical areas and unstable pavement.
- Close the building’s main shutoff if it is safe and the leak is causing damage. Do not enter standing water near electrical equipment.
- Call B&L at (816) 347-2610. Describe where water is appearing, whether pressure changed and whether the meter continues moving.
- Contact the water utility when appropriate. If the leak appears near the street, meter or utility main, the utility may need to determine which side is affected.
Ownership and repair responsibility vary by utility and by the leak’s location. B&L can evaluate the building-side plumbing and coordinate the repair scope after the source is identified.
What Causes Water Service Lines to Fail?
- Age, corrosion and deterioration of the existing pipe
- Soil movement, settlement and seasonal expansion or contraction
- Freezing conditions or insufficient protection from cold
- Roots, rocks and outside pressure against the pipe
- Damage from construction, digging or heavy loads
- Failed joints, fittings or transitions between materials
- Improper sizing, routing, support or installation
- High pressure, pressure changes or water hammer
Kansas City-area clay soils can expand when wet and contract during dry periods. That movement can stress buried piping and connections over time.
Repair or Replace the Water Line?
The right approach depends on the actual pipe and job site. B&L considers:
- The location and number of leaks
- Pipe material, diameter, age and overall condition
- Water pressure and required building demand
- The line’s depth, length and route
- Access around foundations, utilities, trees and structures
- Driveways, sidewalks, patios and landscaping over the line
- Previous repairs and the likelihood of another failure
- Local utility, permit and inspection requirements
A single accessible defect may support a targeted repair. Repeated leaks or widespread deterioration can make replacement the more practical long-term option. B&L reviews the proposed scope before work begins.

Our Water Line Repair Process
- We review the symptoms. Tell us about pressure changes, wet areas, meter movement, utility notices and prior leaks.
- We evaluate the likely source and route. The plumber determines whether the problem appears to involve interior piping, the building water service or utility infrastructure.
- We locate and expose the damaged area when needed. B&L’s plumbing and excavation teams coordinate access around existing utilities and site features.
- We explain the repair or replacement scope. The proposed pipe work, access needs and restoration limits are reviewed before approved work begins.
- We complete and test the work. The repaired or replaced line is checked before the project is closed and required inspections are completed.
Financing through Wisetack is available to qualifying customers for plumbing projects up to $25,000. Ask B&L about current terms and availability.

Water Line Repair FAQ
How can I tell whether my underground water line is leaking?
Common signs include unexplained water use, wet ground, reduced pressure, water surfacing near the foundation or meter, and meter movement while fixtures are off. Testing and site evaluation are needed to confirm the source.
Who is responsible for a leaking water line?
Responsibility depends on the utility and the leak’s location relative to the water main, meter and building. The water utility may need to determine whether its infrastructure or the property’s service line is affected.
Can a water service line be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. A localized accessible defect may be repairable when the remaining pipe is in serviceable condition. Repeated leaks, corrosion or widespread deterioration can make replacement more practical.
Does B&L handle the excavation?
Yes. B&L has an in-house excavation crew that supports underground water- and sewer-line projects.
Why is my water pressure suddenly low?
A leak or restricted service line can reduce pressure, but problems with fixtures, valves, interior piping, pressure regulation or the utility system can cause similar symptoms. Diagnosis identifies the source.
How long does water line replacement take?
The schedule depends on line length and depth, access, nearby utilities, paving or landscaping, inspections, weather and restoration needs. B&L reviews the expected scope after evaluating the job.
Do you offer emergency water line service?
Yes. Call (816) 347-2610 for an active leak, flooding or sudden loss of water service. After weekday office hours, an answering service contacts the on-call plumber.
